On Veteran's Day, I get sentimental about our family's time in the military. In 1997, my husband signed up with the Army. He was awarded 3 years' pay for his medical school in exchange for service to his country. This took us to Washington DC for his Pediatric Residency Program at Walter Reed and Naval Bethesda hospitals. Then he was stationed at Fort Riley where he worked as a pediatrician for 10 years, as an active duty soldier then a civilian employee. I am extremely proud of his work to take care of military families and all of their unique challenges.
In 2005, Louis deployed to Iraq with the 10th CSH in Baghdad. Before he left, we were preparing for a 16 month deployment. Our son Daniel was 2 at the time. We had pages of things to do before he left; house projects that couldn't wait, items to purchase for his deployment, military training, etc; but for me the one thing I really wanted to do was to get a family photo before he left. I wanted photos to put around the house so Daniel would not forget his daddy, I wanted a photo of our family to capture that moment in time, and I wanted a family photo, to be quite honest, in case he didn't come back. I wanted to know I had a photo of us before he left us. I'm not sure why I didn't look around more for photographers; maybe the time constraint, maybe I wanted a good deal, I don't know. But I called a studio in the Mall in Topeka. We'd taken Daniel's photos there once before to get a milestone portrait, and it was fine for a quick photo.. My anxiety level was high, because this portrait meant a lot to me. We showed up, were quickly posed, and given our portraits. They did their job, but failed to get to know us, to know how much these pictures meant to us, to take the time to make sure we received portraits that showed our love for each other or posed us in a flattering way. These portraits made me so sad and I did not share them with anyone.
When I started my photography business, I told myself that I would try to not make anyone feel the way I felt about our portrait experience before Louis deployed. I would take the time to get to know who I'm photographing, their story, and what they need from their photos. I know how anxiety-provoking getting your picture taken can be, and I try my hardest not to waste anyone's time with bad photos. I spend a great amount of time and money to ensure my equipment is professional quality and in good working order, and I devote hours of eduction to ensure I know my craft well. I ask every client to fill out a survey before their session to help me to prepare for the their session to meet their needs. I am overjoyed when someone tells me all about their family. I create a personalized photo shot list for each client based on their needs. I pray before each session that these photos will be a blessing to my clients. I try to listen to them during the session, and I pray and send good vibes to my clients when I am editing their session. I only schedule about one session a week, so that I have time to truly be there for my clients. If you become my client, you get a part of my heart and soul in your photos. My hope is that every client feels their soul uplifted and their story portrayed in their photographs.
I know how important photographs are to military families. They want to capture the moments they are together. They deal with deployments and worries that their children will forget what mom or dad look like; or they want to capture their child to send photos to a deployed spouse. They know the value of capturing love and family. Military families sacrifice so much for our country. As a small token of gratitude for those serving in the military, I give 10% off to military families, just put in the code THANKYOU10 when booking at amymengphotography.acuityscheduling.com/schedule.php
Thank you to all who have entrusted me to capture your family! It is my hope and prayer that you have been blessed by your photos...that your soul was uplifted and your story portrayed. Thank You!
I had fun capturing the Voelker Family at the Kstate Gardens. It's a beautiful backdrop and allows kids play and explore. We found water, flowers, hidden paths, and even a fuzzy caterpillar. I love this gem in Manhattan. and I love capturing the Voelker Family!

How do I decide between studio, on location, or outdoor sessions?
Studio Sessions are great for maternity, newborn, milestone sessions, and headshots. The focus is on the baby or person. The images are clean, crisp, and provide excellent quality and detail because the lighting is controlled in the studio. The images are simple and artistic. They are great for wall galleries, Also, parents tend to enjoy this type of session because it is easy. They do not need to clean their house. Everything is provided in my studio. Studio Sessions are scheduled during a morning workday.
On Location Sessions are great for documenting a family in its own environment. The home plays a role in these type of images. For newborn sessions, the family is the focus rather than the newborn. The images document authentic life. Some parents prefer these sessions because they do not have to travel. These sessions are great for albums. It also works great to document a 1 year old's cake smash. On Location Sessions are generally scheduled during a morning workday. Outside of Manhattan, KS, travel fees may apply.
Outdoor Sessions are great for seniors, families, and extended families. Weather plays a huge role in outdoor sessions. This is why I only offer outdoor sessions in the months of May through October, and we schedule a back up session date. I choose locations that provide for the best lighting and background.
